Hygge – pronounced “hooga” – is a Danish word that describes a cozy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality.
As the cold sets in and the evenings grow darker, the change of seasons can dampen the motivation of many children (and adults—hello 🙋♀️). After a long day of school, the commute home, or playing sports in cold weather, doing homework is the last thing many children feel like doing.
My best tip: Find ways to embrace Mother Nature and her whims. Do your hygge homework.
The Danes are experts at this. Hygge is the glow of a beautiful candle, the feeling of a cozy blanket around you, the warmth and contentment of the first sip of tea.
If you involve your child in the planning and implementation of the “Hygge Homework Plan,” they will be better able to identify with the idea and develop their independence as a learner.
3 easy ways to make homework hygge:
Hygge Homework Nook: Set up a dedicated homework nook with soft lighting (lamps, fairy lights, battery-operated candles), comfortable seating, and a blanket. This cozy, distraction-free space can make studying a pleasant and stress-free experience for both children and parents.
The Hygge Soundtrack: Ask your child to find a hygge soundtrack for homework. A crackling fire? Classical music? Opera? Something instrumental that promotes concentration during homework.
Dress for (comfortable) success: Many school uniforms can be layered, are tight, and, let's face it, aren't optimal for comfort and/or learning. Changing out of the school uniform can help children put the day behind them and relax after school before settling in and tackling the day's homework.
